Backcountry

Expeditions

We believe that nature provides incredible classrooms and unparalleled spaces to spend time with yourself. There is no better way to access the totality of our mission than from the hull of a canoe, or from the glow of a campfire after a long day on the trail. We contract with the best outfitting companies in the country to bring the combination of access, adaptability, and risk management into perfect focus on our courses. We have designed water-based expeditions, including sailing, canoeing, and sea-kayaking for folks with mobility and joint issues, ultralight backpacking trips for people who need to be mindful of pressure and weight considerations on soft tissue, horse-packing and overland trips for people who need to let something else get them into the landscape, cycling trips that allow low-impact touring of wild and scenic spaces, and a combination of these modalities as a single expedition course.

For teams of all sizes

Training and Development Programs

GutMonkey believes in and supports programs that “pay it forward.” We want to see the various topics and concepts we are passionate about sent forth into the communities we serve, and empower those affected with a chronic health condition to become change agents and educators in their home communities. To that end, we have run regional and national train-the-trainer programs, workshops, and weekend retreats that focus on preparing communities to build up from the foundation we provide. Topics have been widely varied, and have included: designing and implementing effective teen programs that tackle transition skillbuilding, summer camp staff trainings for programs serving medically affected youth, parent workshops on emotional regulation and its importance in self-infusion success for children, parent-teen workshops on communication strategies for families, and advocate trainings for affected patients and their caregivers. We can also do work in this vein for our funders with their nurse educators, advocacy teams, and patient liaisons.

Week-long

Residential Programs

Community building can begin or be nurtured in a conference room or at a day-long event, but the most effective way to bring a group of folks together that share a common diagnosis and experience, is to foster a space where people can spend multiple days engaged in a topic together. We have run residential programs that focus on leadership skill building, advocacy strategy, mentorship, emotional regulation and resiliency, mindfulness, movement, and pain management, eating for health and well-being, and adaptive physical activity for a more active lifestyle. Attempting to tackle any subject, let alone a subject that requires a shift in personal beliefs and attitudes, in only a few hours, leads us into the territory of feel-good seminars with low accountability. GutMonkey wants to give people the time together to create both the good feelings, as well as the support and accountability of a community that can motivate real behavior change. That’s where the magic is!

Powerful

Keynotes

A keynote presentation is a great way to connect with a particular community around a topic that is important to them. We specialize in creating highly engaging, emotionally relevant, and experiential keynote presentations, where folks will be engaging with each other, laughing, connecting, and sharing stories around topics connected to healthcare and healthier living. Our keynotes have been delivered at national conferences, regional foundation symposia, internal corporate events, and as part of staff trainings and development workshops for various professionals associated with providing quality education and programming in medically affected communities. We design our keynotes in the same way we design all of our programs, tailoring them to our audience, and building rapport through storytelling, visual imagery, games, and shared experiences.

Weekend

Retreats

We know that life is full, and for a lot of adults, taking a week away from the responsibilities of career, parenting, caregiving, and a household seems almost impossible. A weekend retreat is often a more navigable first step in attending an experiential healthcare event. We want to make taking those first steps toward taking better care of the self as stress-free as possible, and this format tends to be ideal for caregiver, women’s, and family events, where we still have a few days to dig into the overlays of psychosocial and physical wellness and wellbeing. We see again, and again how a weekend retreat can open people up to the need for more time spent taking care of themselves, and often use a weekend retreat as a starting point towards a longer-form residential experience.
